Air Peace Crew Tests Positive for Alcohol, Cannabis After Boeing 737 Incident – NSIB


The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has confirmed that some members of the Air Peace flight crew tested positive for alcohol and cannabis after a Boeing 737-524 incident in Port Harcourt.

The aircraft, with registration number 5N-BQQ, was involved in the incident on July 13, 2025, at Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo International Airport, Omagwa, Rivers State. The flight had departed from Lagos with 103 passengers and crew on board.

In a statement, NSIB Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, said toxicological tests revealed “positive results for alcohol consumption.” She also confirmed that a cabin crew member tested positive for THC, the active substance in cannabis.

Oladeji explained that the results are being reviewed under the human performance and safety management aspects of the investigation.

According to NSIB, the aircraft landed long on Runway 21 following an unstabilised final approach. It touched down 2,264 metres from the runway threshold and stopped 209 metres into the clearway.

Fortunately, all passengers and crew disembarked safely. No injuries were reported.

Following the incident, NSIB issued immediate safety recommendations to Air Peace Limited. These include:

Stronger crew resource management (CRM) training, especially for unstabilised approaches and go-around procedures.

Oladeji added that a preliminary report has been published on the NSIB website. The final report will provide more detailed conclusions and further safety recommendations to strengthen aviation safety in Nigeria.
