Xabi Alonso Reports for Duty as Chelsea Manager
Chelsea have officially begun a new chapter under Xabi Alonso, with the Spaniard reporting for duty at the club’s Cobham Training Centre ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The 44-year-old was appointed Chelsea manager in May on a four-year contract and officially assumed the role on July 1, replacing Liam Rosenior following a turbulent campaign for the Blues.
Alonso arrives with an impressive managerial résumé, having guided Bayer Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title during an unbeaten domestic campaign before taking charge of Real Madrid. Chelsea said his appointment reflects the club’s belief in his leadership, coaching philosophy and ability to lead its next phase of development.
Speaking after his appointment, Alonso said: “Chelsea is one of the biggest clubs in world football and it fills me with immense pride to become manager of this great club. We want to build a team capable of competing consistently at the highest level and fighting for trophies.”
Chelsea also shared footage of Alonso’s arrival at Cobham as he met players and staff to begin pre-season preparations, with fans expressing optimism that the former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder can restore the club’s competitiveness.
The Spaniard’s immediate focus will be preparing the squad for the new Premier League campaign as Chelsea seek to bounce back from a disappointing 2025/26 season and re-establish themselves among England’s elite.
