Troost Ekong, Adams Seal Win as Super Eagles Defeat Lesotho 2–1
Nigeria’s Super Eagles reignited their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign with a determined 2–1 victory over Lesotho on Friday, securing three vital points in their Group C battle.
After a tense first half, William Troost Ekong broke the deadlock in the 55th minute, calmly slotting home from the penalty spot after a Lesotho defender was penalized for handball inside the box. The goal sent the home supporters into wild celebrations and shifted momentum firmly in Nigeria’s favor.
Akor Adams doubled the lead in the 80th minute with a brilliant finish, showcasing his composure and power inside the penalty area. Lesotho, however, refused to go down quietly as Kalake pulled one back in the 83rd minute, setting up a nervy ending.
Despite late pressure, the Super Eagles held firm to claim all three points, a result that keeps their World Cup dream alive heading into the final group game.
However, elsewhere in the group, Benin Republic’s victory meant Nigeria remain three points behind the leaders on 14 points, with goal difference still posing a challenge.
The result leaves the Super Eagles with three key pathways to qualification:
- Win the final match against Benin Republic, which could seal top spot.
- Hope South Africa and Benin drop points in their last fixtures.
- Improve goal difference, as it could prove decisive if teams finish level on points.
With just one match remaining, Nigeria’s qualification fate isSuper not fully in their hands, but their spirited display against Lesotho has reignited optimism among fans.
For Lesotho, the defeat effectively ends their campaign, leaving them with nine points and little mathematical hope of advancing.
The final-day showdown now looms large, as Nigeria will need both precision and resilience to book their ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
