Super Eagles Hit by Nwabali Injury Ahead of Qualifiers

Nigeria’s preparations for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers have been hit hard as first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali sustained an injury while playing for Chippa United.

According to Punch, the 29-year-old shot-stopper was stretchered off in the first half of Tuesday’s league clash against Richards Bay, visibly in pain after going down. His condition is still being assessed by Chippa United’s medical team, leaving his availability in doubt.

The timing of the injury raises major concerns for Nigeria, with crucial qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa just weeks away. Nwabali, who has made 21 appearances for the Super Eagles, has been a key figure in coach Eric Chelle’s plans.

His absence could deepen Nigeria’s goalkeeping crisis. Maduka Okoye remains sidelined due to a two-month suspension for illegal betting activities. Other options are less experienced:

Amas Obasogie, based in Tanzania, is yet to feature for the Super Eagles.

Adebayo Adeleye, of Greek side Volos NPS, has only one appearance.

Ebenezer Harcourt, a 15-year-old call-up who impressed at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, is not expected to start such high-stakes fixtures.

Currently, Nigeria sits fourth in its World Cup qualifying group with seven points, six behind leaders South Africa. With two crucial games ahead, Nwabali’s absence could severely hamper the Super Eagles’ chances of closing the gap.
