Reps Call on FG to Offer Free Cancer Screening, Subsidise Treatment Costs
The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to make cancer screening free for all Nigerians and to subsidise the high cost of treatment.
This resolution followed the adoption of a motion on Wednesday raised by Honourable Adeyemi Oseni on the “Need to Subsidise the High Cost of Cancer Treatment in Nigeria.”
Hon. Oseni drew attention to the growing prevalence of cancer in the country, stressing that urgent intervention is required. He cited data showing that approximately 125,000 Nigerians were diagnosed with cancer in 2020 alone.
“Cancer is fast spreading among Nigerians, and the financial burden on patients is immense. We need to act swiftly to reduce the suffering of our people,” Oseni stated.
The House directed its Committee on Healthcare Services to work with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, along with other relevant agencies, to develop a strategy for the Federal Government to provide subsidies on cancer treatments and related medications.
The lawmakers also emphasized the importance of early detection and prevention, advocating for accessible and free cancer screening services nationwide to improve health outcomes and save lives.
