Peter Obi Cares, Not Desperate Like Others – Chimamanda Adichie
Renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has reiterated her support for former presidential candidate Peter Obi, saying he stands out from other politicians because he genuinely cares about Nigeria and is not driven by desperation for power.
Speaking in an interview on Channels Television’s Amazing Africans, Adichie described Obi as a man whose leadership desire is rooted in service, not ego.
“He doesn’t need to be president. He wants to be because he cares about Nigeria,” she said. “That’s a very important distinction. There are people who are desperate to become president, not because they have any good intentions, but because of their egos.”
Adichie, who has long been vocal about her support for the Labour Party candidate, stressed that her endorsement is based on Obi’s values, humility, accountability, and consistency.
“Peter Obi is not the kind of person who expects gratitude for doing his job. He believes leadership is a responsibility, not a favour. He is someone who is accountable to the people,” she added.
Reflecting on their 15-year friendship, Adichie described the former Anambra governor as one of the simplest and most consistent people she has known. According to her, Obi’s values have remained unchanged over the years.
“He is genuine, consistent, and curious, qualities I believe are essential in any leader.”
Adichie noted that while she tries not to dwell on future political uncertainties, her hope remains that Obi continues to represent the kind of leadership Nigeria needs.
A vocal supporter of Obi during the 2023 presidential election, Adichie had previously endorsed him in a birthday tribute, describing him as “my big bro.” She also made headlines with her open letter to U.S. President Joe Biden, questioning the credibility of Nigeria’s 2023 polls and warning against endorsing a flawed electoral process.
