Oborevwori Urges Media to Strengthen Role in Promoting Accountability, Showcases Delta’s 55% Debt Reduction
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on the media to strengthen its role as watchdog and bridge between government and citizens by promoting accountability, transparency, and good governance.
The Governor made this call on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at the 12th Annual Conference and AGM of the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN), held at MBB Events Centre, Effurun, Delta State. The event had as its theme “Corruption, Governance, and Media in Nigeria.”
Represented by the Executive Director, Projects, Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Olorogun Dr. Ebenezer Okorodudu, the Governor highlighted his administration’s commitment to fiscal responsibility, disclosing a remarkable 55% reduction in domestic debt.
According to him, Delta’s debt burden has dropped from ₦465.4 billion in June 2023 to ₦204.7 billion as of March 2025. He attributed the achievement to deliberate cost-cutting measures, strategic debt management, and long-term economic sustainability plans.
Dr. Okorodudu further outlined the state’s progress in clean energy, sanitation, and waste-to-wealth initiatives, noting ongoing plans to establish the Delta Electricity Commission and the Delta Rural Electrification Agency. He stressed that these reforms, alongside investments in urban and rural infrastructure, have positioned Delta State as Nigeria’s fourth-largest economy.
While commending the media for its contribution to democracy, the Governor urged journalists and communication professionals to remain steadfast in their duty to hold leaders accountable while fostering trust between citizens and government.

Earlier, ACSPN National President, Prof. Rotimi Williams Olatunji, explained that the conference was aimed at tackling the multifaceted challenges of corruption and its effect on Nigeria’s development. He praised Delta State for hosting the event and acknowledged Governor Oborevwori’s support.
Keynote speakers included Prof. Richard Ikiebe, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukayode, and Prof. Ayobami Oyebode, who all addressed issues of corruption, governance, and the role of the media.
The highpoint of the event was the presentation of certificates of recognition to outstanding organisations and personalities who have contributed to national growth.
Notable attendees included Prof. G. G. Darah, Prof. Abigail Ogweze Ndisika, Prof. E. M. Mojaye, and Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, Director-General, Bureau of Communication, Delta State.
