Flood Alert: 15 States to Witness Heavy Rainfall – FG
The Federal Ministry of Environment has issued a flood alert for 15 states across Nigeria, warning that 43 locations may experience heavy rainfall that could trigger flooding between September 4 and September 8, 2025.
The alert, released on Thursday by the National Flood Early Warning Centre, was signed by the Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Abdullahi Bokani.
Flooding remains one of Nigeria’s most critical environmental challenges, often leading to displacement of communities, destruction of farmland, loss of property, and outbreaks of waterborne diseases. With climate change and inadequate drainage systems worsening the situation, many communities remain highly vulnerable during the rainy season.
The ministry listed the affected states and locations as follows, Ebonyi (Afikpo), Cross River (Edor, Ikom, Itigidi, Akpap), Kano (Gwarzo, Karaye), Zamfara (Anka, Gummi, Kaura Namoda, Maradun, Shinkafi, Bukkuyum), Taraba (Dampar, Duchi, Garkowa, Gassol, Gembu, Gun Gun Bodel, Kambari, Mayo Ranewo, Mutum Biyu, Bandawa, Ngaruwa), Abia (Eziama, Umuahia).
Other states include; Yobe (Geidam, Kanama, Potiskum), Plateau (Langtang, Shendam, Wase), Borno (Ngala), Imo (Okigwe, Otoko), Niger (Sarki Pawa), Sokoto (Sokoto, Wamakko, Isa, Shagari, Makira), Kaduna (Kafanchan), Akwa Ibom (Oron).
However, the Federal Government’s flood-relief efforts also announced that they recently received a boost after the Chinese government donated $1 million to support victims in northern states.
Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu, signed the exchange notes with the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, in Abuja.
Bagudu described the support as timely, adding that it would deliver relief materials and rebuild livelihoods in affected communities. He further assured Nigerians that a transparent monitoring and evaluation framework would ensure the assistance reaches intended beneficiaries.
Ambassador Dunhai expressed China’s solidarity with Nigeria, noting that both countries have recently suffered devastating floods.
“In times of difficulty, China and Nigeria always stand together,” he said.
The latest warning comes just weeks after the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) predicted thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across several states, cautioning that flash floods are possible in Bauchi, Jigawa, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kano.
