Oborevwori Set to Commission Model Technical College Oghareki as Delta Expands Technical Education Drive
The Delta State Government has announced that the newly constructed Model Technical College in Oghareki, Ethiope West Local Government Area, is nearing completion and will be commissioned by Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori in the coming weeks as part of efforts to strengthen technical and vocational education across the state.
The disclosure was made during an inspection of the facility by the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, accompanied by the Commissioner for Technical Education, Mr. Smart Ufoh, and Chairman of Ethiope West Local Government Council, Hon. Chris Onogba.
Aniagwu explained that the inspection was aimed at evaluating the institution’s readiness ahead of inauguration and ensuring that the project meets the quality standards set by the Oborevwori administration.
According to him, a few minor defects and unfinished areas were identified during the visit, and both the contractor and relevant government officials have been directed to complete all corrective works within two weeks.
“We came here to assess the level of preparedness ahead of His Excellency’s inauguration of this project. During the inspection, we observed certain areas requiring attention and have directed immediate action to ensure everything is completed before commissioning,” Aniagwu stated.
He expressed satisfaction with the overall standard of the project, describing the institution as a world-class educational facility designed to compete with top institutions across Nigeria.
“This facility can pass for a university in some states. That is the standard Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is delivering across Delta State. The Model Technical College in Omadino has already been commissioned, while the one in Irri is approaching completion,” he added.
Aniagwu said the administration remains committed to creating opportunities for young people through technical and vocational education capable of promoting self-reliance, entrepreneurship, and economic growth.
He noted that adequate security infrastructure has been integrated into the project, including perimeter fencing, security wire installations, controlled access points, and student hostel facilities.
The commissioner also urged residents and host communities to take ownership of the institution and protect it from vandalism.
“If anybody vandalises facilities here, they are not robbing government alone but denying future generations opportunities for growth and development. This institution belongs to the people,” he said.
Aniagwu further disclosed that maintenance mechanisms, including contractor retention and guarantee periods, have been established to address any defects after handover.
Also speaking, Commissioner for Technical Education, Mr. Smart Ufoh, commended Governor Oborevwori for placing technical education at the centre of his administration’s development strategy.
According to Ufoh, the government’s investment in modern technical institutions reflects deliberate efforts to equip young people with employable and industry-relevant skills.
“His Excellency is passionate about education and sees technical education as a pathway to reducing unemployment and boosting productivity among youths,” he said.
He assured that the Ministry would immediately commence corrective measures to ensure full readiness before commissioning and revealed that plans are already underway to recruit and deploy additional teachers to support smooth academic operations.
Drawing lessons from the recently commissioned Model Technical College in Omadino, Ufoh said government had developed strategies to guarantee sufficient staffing and effective school management.
On his part, Chairman of Ethiope West Local Government Council, Hon. Chris Onogba, described the institution as a transformative project for the area and a strategic investment in youth empowerment.
According to him, access to practical and technical skills would reduce unemployment and contribute to improved security across communities.
“This project is important because it focuses on empowering our young people. When youths acquire skills, they become productive and self-reliant, and communities become safer,” Onogba stated.
He assured that the council, traditional institutions, youths, and community stakeholders would continue working together to protect the facility.
The Model Technical College, Oghareki, is among several education projects being delivered under Governor Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E. Agenda aimed at expanding access to quality technical and vocational education while preparing Delta youths for emerging economic opportunities.
