Oborevwori Flags Off Warri–Sapele–Benin Road Reconstruction
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Tuesday performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the reconstruction of the Warri–Sapele–Benin Dual Carriageway in Uvwie and Okpe Local Government Areas, describing the project as a symbol of renewed collaboration between the Federal and State Governments for the benefit of Nigerians.
Speaking at the flag-off event, Governor Oborevwori said the road reconstruction represented “another major step forward in the infrastructure renewal drive of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government, in partnership with the Delta State Government.”
He described the Warri–Sapele–Benin Road as a critical national asset linking major South-South cities and connecting Delta to Edo and other states.
“The section we are flagging off covers a dual carriageway with reinforced concrete pavement, expanded shoulders, and extensive stormwater drainage systems, all designed to ensure durability and safety of road users,” the Governor said.
Governor Oborevwori emphasized that the project reflected the benefits of intergovernmental collaboration, noting that development is faster when all tiers of government work together.

“Although this road is a federal route, the users are Deltans and Nigerians, and their safety and comfort are what matter most to us,” he stated.
He revealed that the Delta State Government had paid ₦10 billion in compensation to facilitate construction of the Second Niger Bridge access road, aimed at improving traffic flow between Asaba, Onitsha, and nearby communities.
The Governor lamented the hardship endured by motorists and traders on the Warri–Sapele–Benin route, saying the reconstruction would improve mobility, reduce travel time, and boost economic activities in the region.

“Beyond the economic benefits, the project will strengthen security. Criminals exploit bad roads to commit crimes. Once completed, this highway will make movement safer and aid faster security response,” he said.
Governor Oborevwori reaffirmed his commitment to leaving lasting legacies across Delta State, assuring the people of Uvwie Kingdom that their requests regarding the Mother and Child Hospital and provision of a 500KVA transformer would be addressed.
“At over sixty years of age, I’m not here for personal gain but to leave legacies that generations will remember. By the time I leave office, I want Deltans to proudly say, ‘Oborevwori did this, Oborevwori did that,’” he added before officially flagging off the project from Effurun Roundabout to after Ohore, before Ometan Bridge.
Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, described the 10km dual carriageway as the vision of a transformational leader, praising Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to infrastructure growth.
He explained that the project would feature 8.8-metre-wide carriageways on both lanes, exceeding standard width and would be completed within 12 months.
General Manager of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), Engr. Thomas Feng, commended the Governor’s trust in the company and assured that CCECC would deliver the project on schedule and to world-class standards.
Chairman of Uvwie Local Government Council, Chief Anthony Ofoni, announced that Airport Road in Effurun would be renamed Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori Way in honour of the Governor’s leadership and developmental efforts.
Also speaking, HRM Emmanuel Sideso, Abe I, the Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom and Chairman of the Urhobo Council of Traditional Rulers, praised the Governor for prioritizing key projects in the area, including three flyovers and road expansions in Warri and Effurun.
Representing the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, Okakuro Mike Afe also lauded the Governor’s developmental strides and prayed for the successful completion of his eight-year tenure under the MORE Agenda.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by top government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, and business executives, all hailing the project as a beacon of renewed hope for Delta and Nigeria.
