How Penalties Shaped the AFCON Semi-Final
Nigeria and Morocco could not be separated after 120 minutes, so the AFCON semi-final was decided by a penalty shootout.
The game ended 0–0 in regulation time and extra time, with both teams struggling to create clear chances. Nigeria stayed organised, while Morocco relied on their home support, but neither side found a breakthrough.
Penalties then settled it.
Morocco won the shootout 4–2 after Nigeria missed two spot-kicks. Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou saved both penalties to send the hosts into the final.
Nigeria had matched Morocco throughout the match but paid the price from the spot. While Morocco converted calmly, the Super Eagles failed to take advantage when it mattered most.
When the final Moroccan penalty was scored, the home fans celebrated as their team booked a place in the AFCON final. Nigeria, meanwhile, were left disappointed after seeing their campaign end through penalties rather than open play.
The Super Eagles will now face Egypt in the third-place playoff, while Morocco move on in search of their first AFCON title in 50 years.
