2026 World Cup Ticket Rush Sends Prices Sky-High
FIFA World Cup 2026 ticket demand has smashed records worldwide, with millions of fans applying for seats and causing resale prices to surge to unprecedented heights, igniting backlash from supporters who say the costs are pricing “ordinary fans” out of the game.
According to FIFA figures, more than 150 million ticket requests were submitted during initial sales phases, a number that oversubscribed availability by over 30 times. The massive global interest reflects intense demand from supporters in over 200 countries.
On secondary markets and official resale platforms, prices have climbed sharply. Some opening match tickets are now listed well above original face values, and even on FIFA’s own resale marketplace, final tickets have soared into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino defended the pricing by saying the overwhelming demand forced allocation through a lottery system and reflects normal market dynamics for major events, though critics argue affordability concerns remain.
Fan groups like Football Supporters Europe have publicly denounced the pricing strategy, calling it “extortionate” and lamenting that many loyal supporters now face barriers to attending matches.
Despite efforts by FIFA to offer limited low-cost ticket tiers, critics say these represent only a tiny portion of the total inventory, doing little to ease broader affordability issues.
As June’s kickoff nears, the tussle between demand and accessibility continues to play out on ticket exchanges, fueling intense debate across the global football community.
