ASUU Strike: FG Directs Vice-Chancellors to Enforce ‘No Work, No Pay’ Policy
The Federal Government has directed the enforcement of the “No Work, No Pay” policy across all federal universities following the nationwide strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday.
In a statement issued by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the government instructed all vice-chancellors of federal universities to ensure strict compliance with the policy in line with extant labour laws.
According to the directive, every academic staff member who fails to perform their duties during the strike period will have their salaries withheld. The statement further directed the National Universities Commission (NUC) to conduct roll calls and monitor compliance across all federal universities, with detailed reports to be submitted to the ministry.
The statement, however, exempted members of the Congress of University Academics (CONUA) and the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) from the sanction, emphasizing that the directive applies specifically to ASUU members participating in the strike.
Dr. Alausa reiterated that the Federal Government remains committed to dialogue and called on the striking lecturers to return to the negotiation table in the interest of students and the stability of the university system.
“The Federal Government is committed to education and will continue to engage constructively to address the legitimate concerns of all stakeholders,” the minister stated.
The latest development comes amid rising tensions between ASUU and the Federal Government over the union’s demands for improved welfare, funding for university revitalization, and implementation of previous agreements.
