DOPF to Mark World Press Freedom Day in Asaba
The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has announced plans to commemorate the 2026 World Press Freedom Day in Asaba, with a strong focus on the role of journalism in promoting peace and preventing conflict.
In a statement issued on Saturday, May 2, 2026, by the Secretary of the planning committee, Inneh-Ozah Barth, and Chairman, Julius Oweh, the forum disclosed that the event will hold on Wednesday, May 6, at the DOPF Secretariat near St. Patrick’s College, beginning at 11:00am.
The organisers explained that although the global observance is marked on May 3, the event was rescheduled to May 6 to allow for broader participation of stakeholders.
According to the statement, communication scholar, Gideon Uduchukwu Isika of Dennis Osadebay University will deliver a keynote lecture titled “Journalism as a Tool for Conflict Prevention and Peace Building,” reflecting this year’s global theme on shaping a peaceful future through responsible media practice.
The event will also feature Felix Ofou, Executive Assistant on New Media to the Delta State Governor, as Special Guest of Honour, alongside media professionals, scholars, and practitioners.
World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993, following a recommendation adopted at the 26th session of UNESCO in 1991. It traces its origins to the historic Windhoek Declaration, which called for a free, independent, and pluralistic press as a cornerstone of democracy and development.
The forum noted that the celebration will provide a platform to honour the media as the Fourth Estate of the Realm while deepening public understanding of its role in governance, accountability, and democratic consolidation.
It added that the gathering would also reinforce ethical journalism, promote responsible reporting, and strengthen collaboration among stakeholders in advancing peace, unity, and sustainable development.
