DESOPADEC Disburses Bursary Awards to 8,000 Indigent Students in Oil-Producing Communities
It was a moment of joy for thousands of indigent students as the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) commenced the disbursement of bursary awards to beneficiaries in its mandate areas across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
The initiative, championed by DESOPADEC Board Chairman, Chief John Nani, and Managing Director/CEO, Chief Festus Ochonogor, underscores the Commission’s dedication to supporting education in oil-producing communities.
Speaking on the development, Executive Director of Social Services, Chief Favour Izoukumor, said DESOPADEC has consistently brought relief to people in oil-bearing communities through empowerment programmes, scholarships, and other initiatives. He noted that the bursary scheme aligns with the M.O.R.E agenda of Governor Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff Oborevwori, adding that “investing in education is the best legacy we can leave for the leaders of tomorrow.”
Chief Izoukumor explained that the bursary process was transparent and inclusive, with all eligible students from host communities given ample time to apply via an online platform before the final selection. “Today, these students are celebrating and thanking Governor Oborevwori for his magnanimity,” he said.
In his remarks, Head of Department for Social Services, Mr. Jude Elaye Asiobe, revealed that a total of 8,000 students are benefiting from the 2025 bursary awards. Beneficiary breakdown includes 2,000 Urhobo students, 1,500 Itsekiri students, 1,500 Ijaw students, and 1,000 students each from Ndokwa, Isoko, and Ika nationalities. He commended the Board for the timely release of funds to support indigent students.
Two beneficiaries, Miss Fega Obonobor and Miss Agbateyiniro Nina Bright, expressed gratitude to DESOPADEC for its continuous support, saying the bursary will go a long way in easing their financial burdens while pursuing their education.
