Delta Govt Reassures Asaba Residents as NLC Protests Insecurity at Government House
The Delta State Government has reassured residents of Asaba and other parts of Delta State that the protection of lives and property remains a top priority, declaring that security is the very essence of governance.
The assurance was given on Wednesday at the Government House, Asaba, by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Johnson Erijo, while addressing members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Delta State Council, who staged a peaceful protest in the state capital as part of a nationwide demonstration against rising insecurity in Nigeria.
Receiving the protesters on behalf of Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Erijo acknowledged the concerns of workers and residents, stressing that “the primary essence of government is the security and welfare of its citizens,” and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to safeguarding lives, workplaces, and communities across Delta State.
While noting that Asaba and Delta State remain relatively peaceful, the Chief of Staff described the protest as an act of solidarity with Nigerians facing insecurity in other parts of the country, adding that the demonstration reflected genuine national concerns that require collective action.
Erijo also noted that the Federal Government is fully aware of the situation, explaining that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu inherited many of the security challenges currently confronting the nation and is taking steps to address them.
“We recognize the efforts being made at the federal level to confront and address the disturbing security challenges being experienced in some parts of the country,” he said.
He conveyed Governor Oborevwori’s message to the workers, emphasizing that peace and security form a core pillar of the MORE Agenda, noting that sustainable development and the delivery of democratic dividends in Delta State depend largely on a secure environment.
The Chief of Staff assured the protesters that their concerns had been clearly received and would be communicated to relevant authorities, including the President, while commending the NLC for conducting the protest peacefully and responsibly in Asaba.
Earlier, the Secretary of the NLC, Delta State Council, Comrade Acrobat Enekhawore, highlighted the severe impact of insecurity on daily life, education, businesses, and public confidence across Nigeria, calling for urgent and decisive action.
The peaceful protest in Asaba, which formed part of a nationwide NLC action, ended with a renewed call for stronger collaboration between the state and federal governments to restore security, protect homes and workplaces, and safeguard the future of Nigerian workers and families.
