Delta Born Agbamuche-Mbu Takes Over as Acting INEC Chairman

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has officially concluded his second tenure in office and handed over the leadership of the commission to Delta-born National Commissioner, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will serve as Acting Chairman pending the appointment of a substantive successor by President Bola Tinubu.

The brief handover ceremony took place on Tuesday during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

Prof. Yakubu, who served as INEC Chairman for ten years, expressed appreciation to the commission’s staff, stakeholders, and Nigerians for their support throughout his tenure. He noted that the commission had recorded significant milestones in electoral reforms, technology deployment, and voter participation during his leadership.

Her appointment as Acting Chairman marks the beginning of a transition period for the commission as the Federal Government prepares to appoint a new substantive head.

Prof. Yakubu first assumed office as INEC Chairman on November 9, 2015, after his appointment by former President Muhammadu Buhari. He was reappointed in 2020 for a second five-year term, which formally ended in October 2025.
