BREAKING: Tinubu Names Retired General Christopher Musa Defence Minister

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed retired Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence.

The President announced the nomination in an official letter transmitted to Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday, seeking legislative confirmation in line with constitutional requirements.

Musa, who served as the 18th Chief of Defence Staff before retiring in October 2025, is expected to replace Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who resigned on Monday citing personal and health-related reasons.

The nomination comes less than 24 hours after Musa visited President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, a meeting that sparked speculation about a major change in the nation’s security leadership.

In the letter to the Senate, President Tinubu described the retired General as a seasoned security professional whose experience will strengthen the nation’s defence architecture at a time of heightened security challenges.

Musa’s appointment marks a significant shift in the administration’s security strategy, coming amid ongoing reforms across the military and defence institutions.

The Senate is expected to review and confirm the nomination in the coming days.
