Biafra Day: Umuahia Streets Empty as Residents Honour Fallen Heroes with Sit-at-Home
Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, came to a standstill as residents observed the sit-at-home directive issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in commemoration of Biafra Day.
According to a report by Vanguard, in the early hours of Friday, major roads in the city were deserted, with only the occasional movement of tricycles and a handful of vehicles disrupting the silence. Commercial activities ground to a halt as shops remained closed, markets were shut, and motor parks stayed empty.
Banks across the city did not open for business, and schools both public and private also remained shut, leaving the city unusually quiet.
Some young people were seen taking advantage of the empty streets to play soccer.
Despite the absence of visible security patrols, the city remained calm, with no reported incidents or confrontations between security operatives and those enforcing the sit-at-home order.
