ASUU Suspends Two-Week Warning Strike, Gives FG One Month to Meet Demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its two-week warning strike, granting the Federal Government a one-month window to finalise the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and address other unresolved issues affecting Nigeria’s university system.

ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced the suspension on Wednesday at a press briefing in Abuja, noting that the decision followed productive engagements with the government and interventions from the National Assembly.

Piwuna explained that ASUU had declared the warning strike on October 13, 2025, over the government’s failure to act on previous appeals to resolve long-standing welfare and policy matters.

“We have not achieved all our objectives, but we are certainly not where we were before the strike began. This shows that had the government responded earlier, there would have been no need for the action,” he said.

He acknowledged the mediation efforts of the Senate Committees on Tertiary Education, TETFund, and Labour, as well as the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, for their roles in facilitating dialogue.

Following an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held between October 21 and 22, the union resolved to suspend the warning strike to allow continued engagement in a peaceful environment.

ASUU, however, cautioned that if the government fails to meet its commitments within the next month, the union would resume industrial action without further notice.

“The struggle continues,” Piwuna stated, urging well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on the government to fulfil its promises and ensure lasting stability in the nation’s higher education sector.
