AFCON 2025: Super Eagles Battle Egypt for Third Place
The Super Eagles of Nigeria take on Egypt’s Pharaohs in the third-place play-off of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) this Saturday, January 17, 2026, at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco.
The match kicks off at 6:00 p.m. Cairo time and will decide the bronze medal winners following both teams’ semi-final defeats. Nigeria were beaten by hosts Morocco 4-2 on penalties after a goalless draw, while Egypt lost 1-0 to Senegal in their semi-final.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has named Moroccan referee Jalal Jayed to officiate the encounter, assisted by officials from across the continent.
This will be a high-stakes clash between two of Africa’s most decorated national teams. The Super Eagles have a perfect record in AFCON third-place play-offs, winning all eight previous editions they contested the highest tally in the tournament’s history. Egypt, meanwhile, aim to secure a podium finish after finishing the group stage strongly and progressing through their knockout fixtures.
Nigeria and Egypt have met 20 times historically, including nine AFCON meetings, with Nigeria holding a slight edge in wins overall. The teams will look to end their continental campaigns on a positive note ahead of next year’s World Cup qualifiers and other international fixtures.
Fans around the world are preparing to tune in, with multiple broadcasters carrying the match live from North Africa.
