Super Eagles to Face Gabon in 2026 FIFA World Cup Play-Offs
Nigeria’s Super Eagles will battle Gabon in the semi-finals of the African zone play-offs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following the completion of the group stage on Tuesday.
The three-time African champions advanced to the play-offs after a dominant 4–0 victory over Benin Republic, securing second place in their qualifying group. Gabon also progressed following a 2–0 win against Burundi, coupled with Ivory Coast’s victory over Kenya, which ensured the Panthers finished second in Group F.
Elsewhere, DR Congo edged Sudan 1–0 to clinch the runners-up spot behind Senegal in Group B, while Cameroon sealed second place in Group D behind Cape Verde. The four runners-up Nigeria, Gabon, Cameroon, and DR Congo now complete the lineup for the African play-offs.
The mini-tournament will take place in Morocco from November 13 to 16, with the semi-final winners advancing to a single-leg final for a ticket to the inter-confederation play-offs in March 2026. The victorious team will then have one final chance to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Based on current FIFA rankings, Nigeria is expected to be the top seed among the four teams and will face Gabon, the lowest-ranked side. Cameroon and DR Congo will clash in the other semi-final.
Both semi-finals are set for November 13, with the final scheduled for November 16. Matches will be decided by extra time and penalties if necessary.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will soon announce the host cities and venues for the fixtures.
While Africa’s nine group winners have already booked direct tickets to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, this play-off route offers one last chance for the continent to add an additional representative through the inter-continental play-offs.
