Shettima Arrives London to Accompany Buhari’s Remains Home
Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in London to accompany the remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari back to Nigeria, following a directive from President Bola Tinubu.
Shettima touched down in the United Kingdom on Monday morning alongside the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila. Upon arrival, they were received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum.
This was disclosed by Stanley Nkwocha, the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communications, in a post on Monday.
President Tinubu had earlier announced the passing of his predecessor, who died in London on Sunday at approximately 4:30 p.m. He subsequently directed Shettima and Gbajabiamila to travel to the UK to accompany Buhari’s body back to Nigeria.
Buhari, aged 82, served as Nigeria’s civilian President from 2015 to 2023 and was previously the nation’s military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985.
As part of national mourning, President Tinubu has ordered all flags across the country to be flown at half-mast in honour of the late leader.
Buhari’s remains will be interred in his hometown, Daura, later on Monday in accordance with Islamic burial rites.
