Peter Obi Declares Intention to Contest 2027 Presidency on Labour Party Platform
Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has affirmed his commitment to contesting the 2027 general elections under the LP banner.
According to a report by VANGUARD, in a 7-minute, 16-second video currently circulating on the Labour Party’s WhatsApp platform, Obi assured a group of young supporters of his continued loyalty to the party.
“I will still continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party,” he stated in response to a question regarding his 2027 political plans.
Addressing concerns about internal crises within the LP and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Obi accused the current government of orchestrating the turmoil. “What is happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is caused by the government, quote me anywhere,” he said.
Recalling his experience during a similar crisis in the past, he narrated, “We had a problem in our party before, in the past. Yar’Adua was the president. I went to him then; he called the INEC Chairman (Prof. Maurice Iwu) and told him I don’t want any problem in any party. We were forced to fix it.”
He added, “But today, in all the parties, there are problems; these are deliberate problems caused by the system. These are some of the things I want to clean up if I have the opportunity. Parties will function very well because you can’t have a system working without a strong opposition.”
Obi encouraged Nigerians, particularly the youth, to remain engaged in the democratic process, emphasizing the importance of personal responsibility in safeguarding the integrity of elections.
“Even if agents are paid by political parties to look after their interests, the ultimate decision about the people’s votes counting rests with voters,” he said.
Obi further noted that positive change often faces resistance from those benefiting from the existing political structure. He also reiterated his stance on introducing an age limit for those seeking public office.
He disclosed, “By the time the 2027 election holds, I would be 65 years old,” and added, “I would not want to be contesting for elections in my 70s.”
