Nico Williams Signs 10-Year Deal with Athletic Club
In a stunning turn of events, Nico Williams has signed a new contract with Athletic Club, extending his stay at the San Mamés Stadium until 2035.
The 22-year-old winger had been heavily linked with a move to FC Barcelona, but he has chosen to remain loyal to his boyhood club.
According to reports, Barcelona had been prepared to activate Williams’ €62 million release clause and a six-year contract agreement was believed to be in place.
However, negotiations stalled over concerns regarding his registration in La Liga, which Barcelona was unwilling to guarantee in writing.
Despite the setback, it seemed likely that Williams would still make the move to Catalonia. But in a dramatic U-turn, he has instead committed his future to Athletic Club, signing a new 10-year contract.
In a heartfelt statement, Williams said, “When it comes to making decisions, the most important thing is to listen to your heart. I am in the place where I want to be, with my people. This is my home. Aupa Athletic!”
The new deal, which was confirmed by Athletic Club, will keep Williams at the club until June 30, 2035. His release clause has increased to around €95-100 million, a significant jump from his previous clause.
Athletic Club celebrated the announcement with a cheeky reference to Barcelona, declaring, “His step forward in the face of dizzying offers is a resounding success for Athletic Club, a true Athletic WIN (Williams, Inaki and Nico).” The club’s official social media post also featured the hashtag #AthleticWIN, a clear nod to their success in securing Williams’ long-term commitment.
With this record-breaking deal, Williams has cemented his place as a cornerstone of Athletic Club’s future. His decision marks a significant victory for the club, and fans will undoubtedly be thrilled to see him continue to don the red and white stripes for years to come.
