Labour Minister Appeals to Nurses, Midwives to Call Off Strike, Resume Dialogue
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, has appealed to the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) to shelve their ongoing strike and return to negotiations.
According to a report by NTA, theĀ appeal was made during a meeting with representatives of the association held on Tuesday, amid the ongoing seven-day warning strike launched by nurses under the Federal Health Institutions Sector of NANNM.
Dingyadi stressed the importance of peaceful dialogue, especially in critical sectors like healthcare, and noted that strike action should be a last resort.
āIndustrial action is not the best approach to resolving disputes, especially within the healthcare sector,ā the Minister stated.
He assured the nurses and midwives that the Federal Government is actively addressing their demands and urged the association to continue engaging through open and constructive dialogue.
āThe government is working seriously to address the concerns raised, and we encourage continued engagement through peaceful dialogue,ā Dingyadi added.
The Ministerās intervention comes after the nursesā union commenced a warning strike on July 30, 2025, citing poor welfare, low allowances, and decades of neglect. Despite earlier appeals from the government, the union maintained that no tangible effort was made to avert the strike.
