Kwankwaso Debunks APC Defection Claims Ahead of 2027 Elections
Former Kano State Governor and national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has denied claims that he intends to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to a report by PUNCH, the speculation surfaced early Friday, alleging that Kwankwaso had submitted a letter of intent to the APC and held closed-door talks with the party’s National Chairman.
In a swift rebuttal, Kwankwaso, through a statement personally signed and released via his media team, dismissed the claims as baseless and lacking credibility.
“We have been alerted to some online statements suggesting that we have submitted a letter of intent to join a political party in the country,” the statement read.
“We would like to clarify that we have not made any such submission to any party. The public is therefore advised to stay informed of any further information regarding our matter through the established official channels.”
The development, however, has triggered fresh political speculation as the 2027 general elections draw closer. Some reports from APC sources earlier on Friday alleged that Kwankwaso had discreetly reached out to the party, sparking heated discussions on social media and within political caucuses.
While Kwankwaso maintains that no formal move has been made, insiders believe that conversations may still be ongoing behind the scenes, especially as the APC is said to be strategizing for a broader northern consolidation ahead of the next election.
For now, Kwankwaso insists that rumours of defection are false, but as Nigerian politics has shown over time, denials often precede major political realignments.
