Gov Oborevwori Approves ₦10bn to Clear Delta State Pension Arrears
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has approved the release of ₦10 billion to offset outstanding pension arrears owed to retirees in the state.
The governor disclosed this on Tuesday during a meeting with the State Pension Board, led by the Chairman, Bureau of State Pensions, Mr. Edwin Ogidi-Gbegbaje, and the State Chairman of the Association of Contributory Retirees, Mr. Anthony Osanekwu.
Oborevwori explained that the decision was taken to resolve pressing issues concerning retirees, including the settlement of backlogs and migration challenges under the contributory pension scheme.
“So far, a total of ₦36.4 billion had been paid in pensions, and ₦1.4 billion was released for payment of pensions monthly since I assumed office. The state has not defaulted in meeting its monthly pension obligations under my watch. Our retirees are men and women who gave their best years in service to the state. It is only just that they receive what is duly owed to them, and under my watch, their welfare will remain top priority,” Oborevwori stated.
To ensure transparency, the governor announced the setting up of an oversight team to monitor the implementation of the ₦10 billion release, stressing that accountability would be strictly maintained.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Bureau for State Pensions, Mr. Edwin Ogidi-Gbegbaje, described the governor’s announcement as a “pleasant surprise,” assuring retirees that the funds would serve as a huge relief.
“The funds will be used exclusively for pension payments, stressing that the system was programmed to ensure transparency and accountability,” he said.
Also speaking, the State Chairman of the Association of Contributory Retirees, Mr. Anthony Osanekwu, expressed gratitude to the governor, describing the gesture as unexpected and magnanimous.
It would be recalled that retirees in Delta State have for years lamented over unpaid pensions, some dating back to 2012.
