Flick Vows to ‘Protect, Support’ Lamine Yamal Amid Criticism
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has come to the defense of teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, promising to “protect” the 18-year-old following recent criticism after the Clasico defeat to Real Madrid.
Yamal came under fire after Barcelona’s loss last weekend, a result that left the defending champions five points behind La Liga leaders Real Madrid. The winger’s pre-match comments suggesting Madrid “steal (and) complain” also sparked backlash from Los Blancos supporters and sections of the Spanish media.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Barca’s La Liga clash against Elche on Sunday, Flick emphasized the importance of support and communication with his young star.
“We speak with him, we are very honest together, he with me and I with him and this is the best way,” Flick told reporters.
“I will always protect him and support him. He’s a fantastic player, fantastic guy, he’s very young and we will go on this way.”
The German tactician confirmed that Yamal, who has been nursing a groin injury for several weeks, is improving despite a subdued performance in the Clasico.
“Lamine is good. I just spoke with him and he’s doing good,” said Flick.
“Of course he has some days where he feels some pain but now he really works hard, he improve a lot about these things. He’s on a good evolution so this is what we can say.”
Flick also revealed that Robert Lewandowski and Dani Olmo have returned from injury, giving the team a much-needed boost ahead of Sunday’s game.
“What I can see now with Dani and also with Lewy back, the last two training sessions were very good,” Flick added.
“It’s not just that they increase the level and quality, but that the others are increasing their level, also the young players. It’s nice to see and hopefully we can show it tomorrow.”
Barcelona remain without Pedri Gonzalez, Gavi, and Joan Garcia, among others. Their opponents, Elche, coached by Eder Sarabia, sit mid-table after an impressive start to the season.
Flick acknowledged Elche’s form, saying they play “fantastic football” and will pose a strong challenge when the two sides meet at the Olympic Stadium.
