FIFA U20 World Cup: Flying Eagles Kick Off 12-Day Camp

Nigeria’s U20 national team, the Flying Eagles, have departed for Chile to commence a 12-day final phase camping in preparation for this year’s FIFA U20 World Cup finals.

According to a report from VANGUARD, the seven-time African champions left Abuja on Sunday evening aboard a Turkish Airline flight to Istanbul, before connecting to Santiago their camping base. A squad of 20 players and 11 officials made the trip, with midfielder Daniel Daga expected to join them in Chile from his base in Norway.

The Flying Eagles will play all their Group F matches at the Estadio Fiscal in Talca, located 250 kilometres from the Chilean capital, Santiago. Nigeria will face Norway on September 29, Saudi Arabia on October 2, and Colombia on October 5.

The team had spent several weeks in training sessions in Abuja before their departure. The 24th FIFA U20 World Cup will be hosted across Santiago, Rancagua, Valparaiso, and Talca.

Nigeria has a proud history in the tournament, having reached the finals in 1989 (Saudi Arabia) and 2005 (The Netherlands), while narrowly losing to Korea Republic after extra time in the semi-finals of the last edition hosted by Argentina.

Group A is headed by hosts Chile, alongside New Zealand, Japan, and Egypt. Group B features South Korea, Ukraine, Paraguay, and Panama. Brazil leads Group C with Mexico, Morocco, and Spain, while Group D includes Italy, Australia, Cuba, and multiple winners Argentina. Group E has USA, New Caledonia, France, and South Africa.
