The Federal Government has been called upon to declare a state of emergency on the Benin- Abuja highway.
The call was made on August 5, 2017 by a former member representing Esan South-East/Esan North-East Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Friday Itulah while commissioning an ultra modern market at Amedeokhian, Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State built by the member representing Esan North-East Constituency 2 in Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Magnus Igbas Ezehi.
Itulah who is a former Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly and PDP chieftain, urged the federal government to immediately deploy the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) and other intervention agencies and apply intervention funds at its disposal to urgently rehabilitate the road as Edo Central and Edo North Senatorial districts have been completely cut off from Benin City the state capital.
He said: “The federal government should declare a state of emergency on that road. Our people in Esanland have been cut off as a result of the deplorable condition of the Benin-Abuja road.
“The federal government should mobilise the Federal Road Maintenance Agency, FERMA, and other intervention agencies to immediately rehabilitate the road.”
The Benin-Abuja highway has been cut off at the Ehor/Iruekpen/Ekpoma corridor, forcing motorists from Edo North to divert through Owo in Ondo state, while those from Edo Central divert through Agbor in Delta state to access Benin City, the state capital.
Itulah eulogised Hon. Ezehi for building an ultra modern market to empower his constituents noting that that is what empowerment is about and berated some law makers and political office holders who give out wheel barrows as empowerment items to their constituents wondering how a wheel barrow can empower any body.
In his remarks, the donor of the ultra modern market, Hon. Magnus Igbas Ezehi assured his constituents of his determination to fulfill his electioneering promises stating that the building of the Amedeokhian market is in fulfillment of his campaign promises.
“It is part of my campaign promise to build a market at Amedeokhian. During my campaign I saw women in an open space and they told me it’s their market. I then promised to build a modern market here if they vote me as a member of Edo State House of Assembly”, Ezehi said.
Hon. Ezehi who is representing the people on the platform of PDP admonished the people that the use of the market should be devoid of politics stating that the market is for all and should be used by all on the basis of first come first served.
“The market is for all our women irrespective of their party and it is on the basis of first come and first occupy on each market day”, he said.
In his remarks, PDP leader in Esan North-East Local Government Area, Bishop Anthony Okosun thanked Hon. Ezehi for making the party proud and not giving excuses for not performing given that he’s in an opposition party in the state.
