Club World Cup: Inter Milan, Monterrey Secure Last 16 Spots

Inter Milan maintained their composure to defeat nine-man River Plate 2-0, securing a spot in the Club World Cup last 16. Mexican side Monterrey also advanced from Group E after thrashing Urawa Red Diamonds 4-0.

In Group F, Borussia Dortmund claimed top spot with a 1-0 win over Ulsan HD, setting up a matchup against Monterrey. The German side will face off against Sergio Ramos’ team in Atlanta on Tuesday.

River Plate’s defeat eliminates the Argentine powerhouse, who will join fellow South American rivals Boca Juniors in departing the tournament despite generating electric atmospheres.

Inter Milan will now face Fluminense, who secured second place in Group F after a 0-0 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Italians faced an intense battle against River Plate in Seattle, where 45,000 fans witnessed Lucas Martinez and Gonzalo Montiel receive red cards.

Francesco Esposito scored his first Inter goal, and Alessandro Bastoni sealed the win late on.

“We were surprised by their intensity, aggression, and pressure in the first half,” said Inter coach Christian Chivu. “Then in the second half, we raised our level of intensity, we’re strong, confident, and have players who can play such a game.”

River Plate’s chances of progressing were dealt a significant blow when Martinez was sent off for hacking down Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the 66th minute.

Esposito’s goal six minutes later left River on the brink, and Bastoni’s late strike ensured Inter’s progress. The match ended in ugly scenes, with River fans throwing objects at Inter players.

“It’s a shame for all the people who came en masse to watch the team that we couldn’t give them the chance to keep going,” said disappointed River coach Marcelo Gallardo.

Meanwhile, Monterrey dominated Urawa Red Diamonds at the Rose Bowl, with three goals in a nine-minute first-half spell.

Nelson Deossa’s long-distance effort, German Berterame’s precise finish, and Jesus Corona’s spectacular strike put the Mexican side in control. Berterame added a late fourth goal.
