CAF Unveils Trophy for WAFCON Morocco 2025
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is poised to unveil a new trophy for the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday, in anticipation of this year’s tournament, scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 5 to 26.
In a statement released on Sunday, CAF announced that the launch will coincide with the host nation, Morocco, and aligns with the organization’s efforts to boost women’s football in Africa.
“The new TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Trophy will be launched on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, in Morocco, the host nation for this year’s event,” the statement read.
“The new trophy is part of CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe’s vision to grow and develop Women’s Football in Africa,” CAF added.
The digital launch will take place in the afternoon, followed by an activation event with sponsors TotalEnergies in the evening.
This year’s edition of the tournament has seen significant changes, including a substantial increase in prize money from $975,000 to $2,400,000.
The 12-team competition features hosts Morocco in Group A alongside Zambia, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Twelve-time finalists Nigeria are grouped with Botswana, Tunisia, and Algeria, while defending champions South Africa are in Group C with Ghana, Mali, and Tanzania.
The tournament’s opening match will feature Morocco against Zambia at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.
The WAFCON is a biennial international women’s football tournament organized by CAF since 1998, serving as the qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup for African nations.
Nigeria leads the tournament’s history with nine wins out of 12 editions, consistently reaching at least the semifinals. Other past winners include Equatorial Guinea and the current champions, South Africa, who won the 2022 edition.
