BREAKING: Court Halts PDP National Convention
The Federal High Court in Abuja has halted the planned national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), originally scheduled to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025.
Delivering judgment on Thursday, Justice James Omotosho upheld a case filed by three aggrieved members of the party, ruling that the PDP violated its own constitution, the 1999 Constitution (as amended), and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines.
The court held that evidence before it showed the PDP failed to conduct valid state congresses before moving to organize the national convention to elect its national officers.
Consequently, Justice Omotosho directed the PDP to “go back and put its house in order” and ensure compliance by sending the statutory 21-day notice before proceeding with any proposed convention.
The plaintiffs, Hon. Austin Nwachukwu (Imo PDP Chairman), Hon. Amah Abraham Nnanna (Abia PDP Chairman), and Turnah Alabh George (PDP Secretary, South-South) had filed the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2120/2025, seeking to stop the convention.
Cited as defendants in the matter were: the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); the PDP; its National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu; National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature; Ali Odefa, Emmanuel Ogidi, and the National Working Committee (NWC) and National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party.
The court also dismissed the preliminary objections filed by the defendants, who argued that the matter was an internal affair of a political party, affirming that the court had jurisdiction to intervene.
