AFCON 2025: Nigeria Claim Bronze Medal
Nigeria’s Super Eagles have secured the bronze medal at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after defeating Egypt 4–2 on penalties in the third-place play-off at Stade Mohammed V on Saturday, January 17, 2026.
The tightly contested match ended 0–0 after regulation time, with both sides unable to break the deadlock in 90 minutes. The game was ultimately decided by a penalty shootout, where Nigeria held their nerve to clinch third place.
Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was the standout performer, producing two crucial saves, including stops from Egypt’s Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush to swing the shootout in Nigeria’s favour.
Nwabali’s saves were pivotal, and Ademola Lookman calmly converted the decisive penalty, sealing the bronze medal for the Super Eagles.
The victory extends Nigeria’s unbeaten record in AFCON third-place matches, with this triumph marking the Super Eagles’ ninth bronze medal in the history of the tournament, a perfect record in these consolation fixtures.
Despite a strong campaign that saw Nigeria reach the semi-finals, they fell to hosts Morocco on penalties earlier in the week. The bronze medal win provides a morale boost ahead of future fixtures and international qualifiers.
Egypt, who had a promising run to the last four, will depart AFCON 2025 disappointed after missing out on a podium finish.
As the tournament heads into its final stages, the Super Eagles’ bronze-medal success stands out as a testament to their consistency and resilience throughout AFCON 2025.
