COVID-19: Red Cross Urges Deltans To Comply With Govt Directives, Calls For Humanitarian Support


The Chairman, Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) Delta State Branch, Mr. Adolphus Anuagasi has called on Deltans to adhere strictly to the directives of health experts on how to stay safe in order not to be infected or spread the Coronavirus disease also known as COVID-19.

Mr. Anuagasi who made the call while speaking on the role of the Red Cross in pandemic situations/Social distancing on Television and Radio Programs in Asaba on COVID-19, said it is pertinent that Deltans conform with the stay at home measure put in place by the state government to combat the disease.

He stated that the world had been hit with various pandemics ranging from tuberculosis, smallpox, Spanish flu, HIV/AIDS among others and the role of the Red Cross in such cases is to sensitize the public on how to mitigate and contain their spread.

While thanking the State Government for organizing a COVID-19 training for one hundred and one (101) Volunteers of the Red Cross Society in the state, Mr. Anuagasi noted that the Red Cross is doing its best in playing its auxiliary role of alleviating the suffering of the vulnerable through massive sensitization.

The State Acting Secretary, Trainer Mr. Peter Ashiedu, said in times like this and in line with the Seven fundamental principles of the Red Cross which are Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality, the welfare of the  most vulnerable persons precedes all operations given the fact that such pandemic affect all aspects of life.

Mr Ashiedu said that Red Cross Volunteers have been carrying out COVID-19 sensitization in the state especially in Schools, Market places among others as well as through the media.

The Disaster Management Coordinator of the Red Cross Delta State Branch, Trainer Felix said the Volunteers of the Red Cross would to play their role effectively in supporting the State Government curb and achieve a Delta free COVID-19.

The Delta State Branch of the Nigerian Red Cross Society has always played pivotal role in alleviating the sufferings of the vulnerable, recounting the Jesse Fire Saga, Itsekiri and Ijaw crisis and most recently, reoccurrence of flood disasters in some parts of the state.

In the face of this COVID-19 pandemic ravaging the world, the Red Cross Society in Delta State has carried out massive sensitization in sixteen (16) Local Government Areas in the state and still counting as sensitization is still on.

Donations to assist the Red Cross in Delta to contribute its quota at ensuring that Delta remained COVID-19 free especially through distribution of alcohol based hand sanitizers to the most vulnerable, provision of nose masks and gloves to Volunteers and mobility to carry out massive sensitization in remote communities as well as respond in emergencies, could be made directly to the State Branch Office at Mariam Babangida Way, Asaba or pay into UBA ACCOUNT NUMBER – 0107959699
