Oborevwori Applauds Navy for Protecting Nigeria’s Maritime Assets

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has praised the Nigerian Navy for its pivotal role in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime assets and protecting vital oil and gas infrastructure, describing the naval force as indispensable to national stability and economic growth.

The Governor gave the commendation on Monday in Asaba when he received the 23rd Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, at the Government House, as part of the Naval Chief’s operational tour of formations across Delta State.

Oborevwori noted that the visit highlights the Navy’s commitment to strengthening security across the Niger Delta, stressing that Delta remains a major contributor to Nigeria’s oil and gas output and therefore requires sustained protection of its waterways and critical installations.

Welcoming the CNS and his delegation, the Governor said the presence of the naval hierarchy in the state signifies strong partnership and dedication to ensuring safety across strategic maritime boundaries.

“I welcome you and your entourage to Government House, Asaba. Your coming shows commitment and love for our state. Delta is one of the highest oil-producing states and a major contributor to the nation.
The Nigerian Navy has been instrumental in shaping our maritime security and protecting our national assets,” he said.

Oborevwori commended the Nigerian Navy’s efforts in combating piracy, supporting internal security operations, and collaborating effectively with other security agencies. He emphasized that Delta State enjoys relative peace because of synergy among security stakeholders.

He added that officers serving in the state have shown exceptional professionalism, which has helped maintain a stable environment for development projects to flourish.

He stated: “I take security very seriously in Delta State. All security agencies here work together in unity and that is why we enjoy peace. Without peace, development is impossible. Julius Berger, CCECC, and several major contractors would not be able to operate here if not for the peaceful atmosphere.”

According to the Governor, the sustained calm in the state has enabled his administration to pursue large-scale infrastructural development, including bridges, flyovers, and highways such as the Ughelli–Asaba expressway, noted as one of the longest in the South-South.

Governor Oborevwori assured the Chief of Naval Staff that the Delta State Government will continue to support the Navy’s mission to enhance security around oil-producing areas and coastal communities.

He said: “Our oil assets are secure because of the good working relationship among all security agencies. If there is a problem in Delta, the entire country will feel it. We are holding the home front here, and we appreciate your commitment.”

Earlier, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, explained that he was in Delta State to assess operational readiness, evaluate challenges, and strengthen strategies for the protection of the nation’s critical oil and gas infrastructure.

Abbas, who assumed office on October 30, said Delta remains a familiar terrain, recalling his previous service in the Central Naval Command.

The CNS appreciated Governor Oborevwori for the consistent support given to naval personnel and other security agencies operating in the state. He noted that improvements in the state’s waterways have contributed significantly to increased oil production.

He added: “I was at the base and saw new developments that were not there when I left. I thank you for that support. We request your continued collaboration so we can have a smooth sail in our operations.”

The courtesy visit ended with assurances from both parties to deepen collaboration to enhance maritime security, secure oil installations, and sustain peace across Delta State and the entire Niger Delta region.

The meeting further reinforced the importance of inter-agency cooperation in protecting Nigeria’s economic assets and ensuring stable national development.
