If I Were President, Nigerians Won’t Be Hungry – Amaechi Makes Bold 2027 Pitch

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared that Nigeria’s next president should come from the South, adding that if he were in office, Nigerians would not be facing the current levels of hunger and hardship.

Speaking in a candid interview on Channels Television, Amaechi described the 2027 general elections as a critical turning point for the country. He framed the contest as no longer between political parties but between the people and what he called the entrenched political elite.

“This election is no longer about party loyalty. It is Nigerians versus the political elite. If you want change, real change, then it’s time to rise,” Amaechi said. “The South is ready to lead. We’re building a platform that gives every Nigerian a voice, and hope.”

He stressed that the presidency should not be based on regional entitlement or dominance, but on capacity, competence, and character.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us. We cannot sustain a democracy where one region dominates while others are locked out. The South has capable leaders. It’s time to restore balance and deliver real results,” he said.

Amaechi, who has aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as part of a broader opposition coalition, also revealed plans for a new political platform African Democratic Alliance (ADA) which he claims is being deliberately blocked by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“INEC is deliberately closing the political space to prevent credible alternatives like ADA from emerging,” he alleged.

The former Rivers State Governor, reflecting on his past record, said his leadership style has always focused on results. He recalled his time as governor, highlighting how he tackled insecurity, built schools in every village, introduced computer access, created agricultural jobs, and ensured financial transparency.

“If I were president today, Nigerians would not be this hungry,” Amaechi declared. “I’ve shown what’s possible with the right leadership.”

He did not hold back in his criticism of the current All Progressives Congress (APC) government, stating:

“This administration is worse than the previous one. People are hungry. Insecurity is rising. The cost of living is out of control.”

Although he stopped short of formally declaring his candidacy for 2027, Amaechi left no doubt about his readiness to serve.

“This isn’t about me, it’s about Nigeria. Once the platform is in place, we’ll talk about who runs. But yes, I am ready and capable to lead this country,” he concluded.
