Electoral Act 2026 Raises Campaign Spending Limits Across All Offices
The recently signed Electoral Act 2026 has significantly raised campaign spending limits for all elective offices in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections, compared with the thresholds under the former Electoral Act 2022.
Under the 2022 Act, campaign spending ceilings were set at:
- Presidential election: ₦5 billion
- Governorship election: ₦1 billion
- Senate: ₦100 million
- House of Representatives: ₦70 million
- State House of Assembly: ₦30 million
- Area Council Chairmanship: ₦30 million
- Councillorship: ₦5 million
The Electoral Act 2026 has revised these limits upward to reflect “prevailing economic realities,” including:
- Presidential election: ₦10 billion
- Governorship election: ₦3 billion
- Senate: ₦500 million
- House of Representatives: ₦250 million
- State House of Assembly: ₦100 million
- Area Council Chairmanship: ₦60 million
- Councillorship: ₦10 million
The Senate leader said the upward review under Section 92(1–8) of the new Act preserves statutory limits while regulating election financing.
The changes form part of broader reforms aimed at enhancing electoral transparency, strengthening governance integrity, and preparing for Nigeria’s 2027 general election cycle.
