Abia Governor Increases NYSC Allowance in Abia to ₦50,000

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has approved a significant upward review of the monthly allowances for members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in the state, raising the payment from ₦4,000 to as much as ₦50,000.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Njoku Ukoha, the new structure introduces a ₦20,000 base allowance for all corps members posted to Abia State. In addition, those serving in state government establishments will receive an extra ₦10,000, while teaching and medical corps members will earn an additional ₦30,000 monthly.

Ukoha explained that the increment complements the Federal Government’s recently approved ₦77,000 NYSC allowance and forms part of Governor Otti’s broader initiative to empower youths and strengthen the public sector workforce in Abia.

“This marks the first major adjustment in 27 years and reflects Governor Otti’s commitment to youth empowerment and workforce development,” the statement read.

The CPS added that the state government has consistently supported corps members by upgrading the NYSC Orientation Camp in Bende Local Government Area including internal road repairs, power installations, and facility renovations despite the camp being a federal property.

“The governor believes that every institution or infrastructure within Abia, whether federal or state-owned, deserves attention because Abians are the direct beneficiaries,” Ukoha stated.

He further recalled that the Otti administration recently implemented the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for health workers across the state, extending it to local government employees to align with federal standards and boost productivity.

With the latest increase, Abia now ranks among the states offering the highest monthly stipends to NYSC members in Nigeria  a move the government says will encourage young professionals to contribute meaningfully to the state’s development.
