Students Mistake Hunters for Kidnappers, Police Deny Reports of Student Abduction in Nasarawa
The Nasarawa State Police Command has dismissed reports claiming that pupils of St. Peter’s Foundation Secondary School in Rukubi, Doma Local Government Area, were abducted on Friday, saying the alarm was triggered by a misunderstanding.
According to a report by VANGUARD, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel, stated that the incident occurred when students heading to the school field for Physical and Health Education classes spotted armed hunters in the area. Frightened, they fled, mistaking the hunters for kidnappers. Teachers quickly escorted the students back to the school premises.
The Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, promptly deployed a joint team of police and military personnel to the area. “Upon arrival, it was discovered that the pupils had sighted some hunters carrying Dane guns and, out of fear, fled, mistaking them for kidnappers. The area was thoroughly combed, and normalcy was immediately restored,” Nansel said.
The proprietor of the school also confirmed that no abduction took place, describing the panic as a false alarm. Security operatives continue to monitor the area to prevent any potential security breaches.
The police command urged the public to disregard circulating reports and advised journalists and media organisations to verify information before publication.
“The report is mere rumour unworthy of publication as factual news,” the statement added.
