Leadership Newspapers Honours Governor Oborevwori with Award for Infrastructure, Inclusive Governance
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has been honoured with the prestigious Leadership Governor of the Year 2025 Award, earning national recognition for his administration’s infrastructure drive and inclusive governance across Delta communities.
The award was presented by Leadership Newspapers Limited at the 18th Leadership Annual Conference and Awards held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Abuja.
Governor Oborevwori was represented at the ceremony by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, at the conference themed: “Political Stability and Sustainable Development in Africa in an Increasingly Unstable Global System: A Roadmap for Nigeria.”
Organisers said the Delta governor’s emergence followed his administration’s aggressive implementation of the MORE Agenda, which they noted has translated into visible development projects spanning the three senatorial districts of the state.
They highlighted the construction and rehabilitation of hundreds of roads, bridges and signature flyover projects that have eased transportation, enhanced inter-city connectivity and stimulated economic activities in urban and rural Delta communities.
The award body also cited investments in the education sector, including school upgrades, employment of teachers and sustained bursary programmes for students, alongside improvements in healthcare facilities and expanded health insurance coverage for residents.
Leadership Newspapers further commended the administration’s empowerment initiatives, which have impacted thousands of Deltans through skills acquisition and support schemes, as well as its fiscal discipline and early implementation of the new national minimum wage.
According to the organisers, these initiatives reflect a governance style rooted in equity, social responsibility and long-term economic stability.
Governor Oborevwori was honoured alongside Governors Hope Uzodimma (Imo), Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara) and Uba Sani (Kaduna), while Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was named Person of the Year 2025.
Speaking with journalists after receiving the award on behalf of the governor, Deputy Governor Onyeme dedicated the recognition to the people of Delta State.
“I thank Deltans for the huge support they have been giving this administration. It is because of their support that we have been able to achieve these milestones. We give God the glory that our efforts are being recognised nationally,” he said.
He pointed to ongoing road construction, bridges, market development projects, healthcare investments and sustained funding of Delta State’s four public universities as evidence of the administration’s development-focused governance.
Onyeme added that the honour would further motivate the government to deepen delivery of democratic dividends across the state.
Chairman of the occasion, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, delivered a keynote address addressing governance challenges in Africa, while Chairman of the Board of Leadership Newspapers, Mrs. Zainab Nda-Isaiah, said the awards celebrate Nigerians demonstrating innovation, commitment and impactful service to the nation.
