INTERPOL: Nigeria Police Repatriate Chinese Fugitive Over $245M Ponzi Scam
The Nigeria Police Force, through the INTERPOL National Central Bureau Abuja, has arrested and repatriated a Chinese fugitive, Xu Qing, to the People’s Republic of China over an alleged $245 million Ponzi scheme.
The suspect was declared wanted by Chinese authorities in Beijing for his alleged role in a large-scale financial fraud involving the illegal absorption of public deposits.
Police investigations revealed that Xu Qing fled China to Nigeria on November 5, 2024, in a bid to evade arrest. A warrant for his arrest was subsequently issued on November 12, 2025, by the Shinan Sub-Bureau of Qingdao Public Security.
Acting on intelligence and sustained surveillance, operatives of INTERPOL NCB Abuja tracked the fugitive to a factory in Olowotedo, Siun Village, within Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.
He was arrested on April 24, 2026, and later repatriated to China on April 28, 2026, through coordinated international police cooperation.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to tackling transnational organised crime and strengthening global law enforcement partnerships.
“Nigeria will not serve as a safe haven for fugitives,” the IGP stated, emphasizing the importance of international collaboration in combating financial crimes.
He also urged Nigerian employers and business owners to conduct proper background checks through the police before engaging foreign nationals in employment or business relationships.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its resolve to clamp down on criminal networks and ensure that offenders are brought to justice, regardless of borders.
