NAFDAC Says No FG Directive to Halt Sachet Alcohol Enforcement
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has denied reports that it was ordered by the Federal Government to suspend enforcement of the ban on sachet alcohol and 200ml PET bottle alcoholic products nationwide.
In a statement on Wednesday, NAFDAC described the allegations of a government directive to halt its regulatory actions as “false and misleading,” stressing that the agency has received no official communication to stop its ongoing enforcement activities.
Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye emphasised that NAFDAC continues to operate within its statutory mandate and in line with official Federal Government policies, and that there has been no formal order to halt enforcement of the sachet alcohol ban.
“The said publication is false, misleading, and does not reflect any official communication received by the Agency from the Federal Government. At no time has the Agency received a formal directive ordering the suspension of its regulatory or enforcement activities in respect of sachet alcohol products,” Prof. Adeyeye said in the statement.
The clarifying statement comes amid a wider public debate over the enforcement of regulations on alcohol products packaged in sachets and 200ml PET bottles, which some policymakers argue are linked to public health concerns, while industry stakeholders have raised economic and social impact issues.
NAFDAC’s position affirms that its enforcement measures remain in force and that any changes to regulatory policy would only follow official directives from the Federal Government.
