De Bruyne Returns to Etihad as Napoli Face Man City in UCL

Kevin De Bruyne will step back onto familiar ground this Thursday as Napoli travel to face Manchester City in a highly anticipated Champions League clash. The Belgian playmaker has hit the ground running in Serie A, scoring two goals in his first three games for the Italian champions.

At 34, De Bruyne is proving that age and past injuries are no barrier. According to PUNCH, the midfielder has quickly become the creative engine in Antonio Conte’s system, helping Napoli maintain a perfect start to their domestic campaign.

De Bruyne spent a decade at the Etihad, winning six Premier League titles and the 2023 Champions League trophy with Pep Guardiola’s side. His return is expected to be an emotional one, but his focus is firmly on Napoli’s ambitions in Europe.

“The role that we’re creating for Kevin is perfect for him because he loves having the ball at his feet,” Conte said after Napoli’s 3-1 victory at Fiorentina, where De Bruyne opened the scoring from the penalty spot.
“He’s a bit of genius. We’re trying to give a new role that helps him give us what he’s capable of giving us. He’s got such great quality, he sees situations that others rarely see.”

Conte has reshaped his tactics to integrate De Bruyne, even pushing Scott McTominay into a freer attacking role. Despite criticism in the past over his European record, the Italian coach sees the clash with Guardiola as an opportunity.
“We’re going there as pupils to learn from the masters, me included, in the hope that the pupil may one day beat the master,” Conte added.

Napoli’s squad has also been reinforced with summer signings. Rasmus Hojlund scored on his debut in place of injured Romelu Lukaku, while defender Sam Beukema netted in his first appearance. Goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic and winger Noa Lang have further strengthened the team, with owner Aurelio De Laurentiis backing Conte’s project.

With De Bruyne pulling the strings, Napoli believe they can challenge Europe’s best and prove their place among the elite.
