In what seems to be a shocking revelation, the Delta State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Rev. Omatsola Williams has stated that her ministry has resolved about 3200 marital cases for married couples in the State since her assumption of duties in 2015.

She disclosed this during the 2018 Ministerial Press Briefing of the Ministries and Directorates in Delta State at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Information, Asaba, stating that, the Women Affairs Ministry also rendered counselling services to over 1,500 troubled families in the period under review.

Omatsola said, “From 2015 to date, the Social Welfare Department in administering the sanctity and harmony of the matrimonial status, handled well over 3,500 reported cases across the State in which over 3,200 of the reported cases have been resolved amicably while others are still pending”, adding that, “also, guidance and counselling services were equally rendered to over 1,500 troubled families.”

The Commissioner further revealed that following efforts to checkmate matrimonial cases, a fee was introduced in the registration process for Churches who wished to conduct weddings alongside other requirement to strengthen marital activities.

“Over 300 Churches were registered before the introduction of payment of fees for the purpose of conducting marriages. However, only few Churches registered since the introduction of payment of fees which also met the basic requirements for approval.”

Rev. Omatsola stressed that Churches that wish to conduct marriages must properly apply and meet with the basic requirements. Some of which she highlighted as, must have functional Safe Box for keeping the Marriage Register within the Church premises, an adequate parking space, legal registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), a standard sized Church Building amongst others as required by the Ministry.

Speaking further, she listed some of the achievements of the State Government through the Ministry in the period under review to include; bounties to 18 families for multiple birth, educational support for 300 orphans, approval of more orphanages, the release of 136 children to adoptive parents, the reunification of over 100 lost children with their families and, feeding and payment of monthly stipends to over 600 ex-leprosy patients.

Others are, evacuation of over 510 mentally challenged destitute across the State and reunification of over 70 healed inmates with their families, job creation for 50 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and currently training 28 more, provision of over 350 Mobility Aids and Appliances to PWDs, sponsorship of Blind persons to farm craft centre for the blind in Lagos State, and the empowerment of over 300 women living with HIV/AIDS with life support equipments and items.
