Delta State Tenancy Bill Passes Second Reading

The Delta State Tenancy Bill has scaled through Second Reading on the floor of Delta State House of Assembly.

Debating on the bill, member representing Ughelli South State Constituency and Majority Whip of the Delta State House of Assembly, Comrade Izeze R.Y. Reuben, who is the lead sponsor of the Bill said the bill seeks to address the breach of agreement between landlords and the tenants, it seeks to deal with mood of tenancy agreement which can be written or oral, it seeks to create a balance so that one party do not oppress the other, excess rent in advance will be a crime if this law is past, insurance of rent receipt will be mandatory under this law.

Speaking in support of the bill, the member Ika-North East, Hon. Anthony Elekeokwuri, a co-sponsor of the bill,  adopted all the submissions and applauded the lead sponsor of the bill, he pointed that the bill is both for the tenant and landlord on individual and corporate rights, he also mentioned that the bill is the only bill that has dealt with abandoned properties like no other, the bill also deals with amicable settlement.

The member representing Burutu I, Hon. Daniel Yingi said that the bill is set to solve the problems between the tenant and landlords.

The Delta State Tenancy Bill received a unanimous support for the second time and was referred to the joint committee on housing and works. The committee is to report back in two weeks.
